| Learning Objectives | In today's business environment, ad-hoc approaches to information systems development are not sufficient. Modern approaches to the development of information systems, such as structured systems development, relational database development, and object-oriented systems development, are required. The Business Information Systems module prepares the student to become a business information systems developer using both structured and object-oriented systems development approaches. It also prepares the student to be able to design and develop business information systems that use a relational database. In this module, the student studies the strategies and techniques for dealing with the inherent complexity in the development of information systems. System development topics include coverage of (1) business systems planning; (2) fact-finding and requirements analysis techniques; (3) information systems process modeling; (4) logical and physical design; (4) user interface design; (5) introduction to database management systems and their use in business. Database topics covered include (1) data modeling, (2) normalization, (3) SQL, (4) transaction management and concurrency control, (5) physical data organization, (6) query optimization, (7) database administration (8) distributed databases, (9) data warehousing, (10) integrating databases with the web.
Upon successful completion of the Business Information Systems module students will be able to:
- plan, manage, and evaluate the development of business information systems;
- use structured and object-oriented systems development approaches;
- identify requirements for business information systems;
- model business processes and data using graphical techniques;
- evaluate models of business information systems;
- design user interfaces, dialogs, and reports;
- design relational models of business system data;
- implement process models and user interfaces as computer software;
- implement relational models using Database Management Systems (DBMS); and
- integrate computer software and DBMS to solve business problems.

| Pre-requisites |
All of the courses in the Business Information Systems module assume a knowledge of, and working skill with, a modular and structured programming language such as Java. Students may have obtained this knowledge and skill by earlier coursework and by satisfying the prerequisite for the VTMIT program.
Completion of the Business Information Systems module requires the knowledge and skills provided by two foundation courses: CS 5044: Object-Oriented Programming with Java and CS 5704: Software Engineering. CS 5044 is a prerequisite for CS 5704.
The prerequisites for courses in the Business Information Systems module are as follows. CS 5044 and CS 5704 are the prerequisites for ACIS 5504: Information Systems Development and Database Concepts. ACIS 5504 is a prerequisite for ACIS 5524 Advanced Database Management Systems. VTMIT students are strongly encouraged to complete all foundation courses prior to enrollment in BIS module courses. |
