  Decision Support Systems Module

» BIT 5474 - Computer-Based Decision Support Systems
» BIT 5495 - DSS Design and Implementation
» BIT 5594 - Web Applications and Electronic Commerce

Completion of two of the three decision support systems courses is required for this module.
Learning Objectives
The advent of powerful microcomputers has revolutionized the manner in which organizations approach many complex managerial problems. This technology allows for the construction of interactive computer-based information systems that use decision rules, models, and comprehensive databases to support the decision making process. In this module, the student will learn how to design and implement such systems in a visual language environment. Module course work includes an in-depth coverage of methods for data access, modeling and computation using a visual language, graphical display of support material and report generation methodologies, object sharing between software components, and the deployment of support systems within a distributed computing environment. Client server systems, common object model methodologies, and the distribution of support systems in a web-based environment are examined in the context of distributed decision support systems.

Upon successful completion of the Decision Support Systems module the student will be able to:
  • explain the technology available for modeling in a visual environment;
  • explain the various data access methodologies available for support system modeling;
  • explain how objects can be shared between software components;
  • explain report generation concepts and problems; and
  • design and develop a prototypical decision support system using a visual environment; and
  • implement a decision support system in a distributed, web-based environment.
Pre-requisites
All of the courses in the Decision Support Systems module assume a knowledge of, and working skill with, a modular and structured programming language such as Java. Students may have obtained this knowledge and skill by earlier coursework or by meeting the prerequisite for the VTMIT program.

Completion of the Decision Support Systems module requires the knowledge and skills provided by two foundation courses: CS 5044: Object-Oriented Programming with Java and CS 5704: Software Engineering. CS 5044 is a prerequisite for CS 5704.

The prerequisites for courses in the Decision Support Systems module are as follows. CS 5044 is a prerequisite for BIT 5474: Computer Based Decision Support Systems. CS 5044 and CS 5704 are prerequisites for BIT 5495: DSS Design and Implementation. VTMIT students are strongly encouraged to complete all foundation courses prior to enrollment in DSS module courses.
