Admissions Process

Steps 1-4 should be completed at least eight weeks prior to the start of the term you wish to begin the program. (The deadlines for submitting all application materials are December 1 for the Spring Semester, April 1 for the Summer Semester, and July 1 for the Fall Semester.)

STEP 1: Make sure you meet the admissions criteria.

STEP 2: Determine whether you are prepared to participate in an online degree program by reviewing VTMIT's expectations of students.

STEP 3: Fill out and submit an online application to the Graduate School

The application process will require you to create a user account. You will be able to complete a portion of the application, save it, and return to edit or finish later before the final submission. You may find the following information useful when filling out the form:

STEP 4: While completing your online application and prior to submitting it, you will be required to upload one copy of your scanned official transcript from each institution from which you have earned or will earn an undergraduate or graduate degree. Do not send transcripts for community college attendance or from any institution where you enrolled in classes but did not earn a degree. All official transcripts and official transcript evaluations should be sent to the following address. Please indicate in your correspondence that you are an applicant to the MIT program.

Please do not mail your official transcripts to us until you have received an offer of admission from Virginia Tech. You may scan a copy of your official paper or electronic transcript provided to you from your institution's Registrar. Do not upload your institution's web-based academic record or a document stating it is not an official transcript. Make sure that all critical and identifying marks have been scanned and are legible. These include the institution's name, your name, the names of your courses and the grades you have received. It is important that you scan both the front and back of your transcript as we will need to be able to review the information provided on the back of your transcript concerning credit hours, the institution's grading scale, etc. Please ensure that your file is in Word (.doc) or PDF format. If you encounter issues with uploading your transcripts in your online application please contact help@applyweb.com. The official transcripts showing degree conferral should be sent directly from your institution(s) to:

STEP 5: Decision notifications are mailed 4 to 6 weeks after admissions materials are received. Once you have been officially accepted into the program, follow steps 6-10.

STEP 6: Create a Virginia Tech user account (called a PID) at the Virginia Tech: Generate PID page. Your PID is a key to your presence at Virginia Tech and you will need it to access your course websites, your student records, library research materials, and more.

STEP 7: Set up your email software to begin checking your new Virginia Tech email account (yourPID@vt.edu). You must check this account regularly as Virginia Tech will use it, even if you request otherwise. See VT Computing - VT Google Apps Mail for details and assistance. There you can also learn how to access your email via Google.

STEP 8: Contact the program advisor at vtmit@vt.edu or 703-538-8384 to begin developing your plan of study. (Your plan of study is an official document outlining the courses you plan to take and their sequence. It must be signed by your program and submitted to the Graduate School when you have completed fifteen credit hours in the program.)

STEP 9: Refer to the Graduate Honor System and understand that it applies to all graduate work submitted for credit.
